Andy was one of the most kind and caring people in the institute. I remember going to him with a mass of data 15 years ago and he immediately turned it into poper interpretable graphs. He helped with innumerable students, even agreeing to come and give career talks to the PhD student away day for Edinburgh Neuroscience several years running. When his own students had issues he was the first to seek help and advice on their behalf. He was a role model as a father, too, working reduced hours in order to spend more time with Helena and Robert. We all knew he was special but not, until last year, just how special. We have lost a wonderful, brave man, and all our thoughts are with his family.
